Vertical Pictures was started by a couple of guys who love surfing, traveling and making films.

In 1997, with our first two loves in mind, we started planning our first surf trip to Costa Rica. Having traveled for surf before we knew it could be difficult if you weren’t familiar with the destination, so this time we picked up a copy of The Surfer’s Guide to Costa Rica in advance. Without a doubt, that surf travel guide helped us plan an excellent trip, and we’ve recommended the guide ever since.

As good as it was, though, it could have been better. If only we could have seen Costa Rica before we went. Saw how the waves broke. What it was really like to drive those potholed roads. And could watch a video of how to get to the best surf spots. That was the “aha” moment.

Combining our love for filmmaking with surf travel was the birth of Vertical Pictures. And what better place to start than with a DVD version of that same book, The Surfer’s Guide to Costa Rica. We would make the DVD informative and entertaining. And make it available as a downloadable mpeg4 to carry along on surf trips. Then do Baja. Nicaragua. And everywhere else we love to surf.
